StartupMonitor is a small utility that runs transparently (it doesn't even use a tray icon) and notifies you when any program registers itself to run at system startup. It prevents those utterly useless tray applications from registering themselves behind your back, and it acts as a security tool against trojans like BackOrifice or Netbus.

Just before Xmas I got an official looking letter & forms from the "Data Processing Protection Corporation" (DPCC, PO Box 36, Guisborough, TS14 6WT. register@emaildppc.co.uk; 01287 638111) telling me than I need to "register in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1988" and asking £95 for the privilege.
Well, you don't need to register (at least my business does not) and it is in fact a scam. In fact registering legitimately is only £35/year.

How I installed RedHat 8 on my Thinkpad X24
There are some useful guides elsewhere on the net such as:
http://www.lmd.jussieu.fr/~polcher/X30/installation_x30.html
http://www.star.bris.ac.uk/~mjh/thinkpad.html
http://www.hero.com/public/x24.html

1. Used Partition Magic 8 to reduce size of XP partition to 15GB
(alternatively you could use http://mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfsresize.html)
2. Used PM8 to create extended partition to use all remaining disk.
3. Changed BIOS settings to allow booting from CD (via docking bay).
4. Booted with RH8 CD #1.
5. Chose text mode install (graphical mode bombed out with GNOME error).
6. Created 8GB ext3 / partition & 450MB swap partition.
7. Chose custom install and the packages I wanted. Installed boot loader (grub) on MBR.
8. Chose "get TCP/IP settings from DHCP/BOOTP" (network cable connected to my router)
9. Completed installing RH8 (takes a while)
10. Rebooted into RH8 and logged in.
11. Installed new up2date packages (see http://linuxtoday.com/security/2003082901926SCRHSW)
12. Ran up2date & registered on the Red Hat Network
13. Chose "all" updates on up2date, downloaded & installed them (takes a while)
14. Reboot with new kernel
15. Download & installed Yellow dog Updater, Modified (http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/)
16. Downloaded & installed Ximian Desktop 2 from http://www.ximian.com (~200MB takes a while, didn't install OpenOffice)
17. Downloaded & installed tpctl http://www-hft.ee.tu-berlin.de/~strauman/tp4utils/
(RPMs from http://dag.wieers.com/packages/)
Can't yet get it to work - unsure if it works on X24
18. Install mp3 support for XMMS
(from http://havardk.xmms.org/dist/xmms-1.2.7-rh8-rh9-rpm/)
19. Install tpb for media keys support
(http://dag.wieers.com/packages/tpb/)
20. Removed GL lines from ~/.xscreensaver
21. Most difficult of all, setting up wireless networking which I worked out with
http://www.linux-wlan.com/linux-wlan/index.html
(RPMs here: http://prism2.unixguru.raleigh.nc.us/)
and this forum post: http://lists.linux-wlan.com/pipermail/linux-wlan-devel/2003-March/002179.html
I eventually managed to get it working...
Namely replace /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-wireless with

and read all the other docs VERY carefully...

DJ Martian: Forthcoming Album Releases 2004
Interesting review of "Revolution: Making of the Beatles' White Album"
Snippet: "...David Quantick is obviously a fan of the Beatles, but from reading this book you get the impression that his sole aim is to protect them (especially Lennon) in the best way possible... by simply castrating anyone who ISN'T the Beatles.
For example, Eric Clapton plays guitar on the track "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Later, George went on to marry George Harrison’s wife (who was married to Harrison at the time of the White Album). The author of this book therefore seeks some kind of vengeance for George's "wrongdoings" (even though Harrison remained strong friends with Clapton)."
